Daily Devotional #1,500

It was nearly 50 years ago this May 25th that we all were taken back a long time ago to a galaxy far, far away. It was nicknamed a space cowboy film, and it changed movies forever and we lined up to watch “Star Wars”. We loved the action and the cool use of miniatures and of course all the characters. We fell in love with Luke, Leia, Han Solo, Chewie, R2D2 and C3PO. We watched breathlessly as the representatives of good and evil, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader battled it out on screen. And behind it all was something that held all that they knew together. It was impersonal and unknowable and the phrase “May the Force be with you” became a common catch phrase. Even now on this day you hear people say, “May the Fourth be with you”! It was mysterious and yet was ever present and was there permeating every aspect of life. Two thousand years before the movie there was a man who came to one of the most celebrated centers of intellectual thought, Athens, Greece and began to talk about not what, but who this was who created all life, all things and held it all together and that in him you would find real power. His name was the Apostle Paul, and he came into Athens and saw idols everywhere. People had no idea who was in charge of the universe and who should be worshiped. He stepped up to speak to a crowd gathered and told them that as he had come into this great city, he noticed on one of the multitude of shrines there was an inscription “To an Unknown God”. And from there he began to tell them about the God that they didn’t know. He told them the gospel of Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection and his provision of salvation from our sins. So, on this fourth day of May, have fun with “May the fourth be with you!” But remember that God’s word tells us… “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth (John 17:3).”

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Acts 17:22-25 NLT So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, (23) for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. (24) “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, (25) and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.

Remember I’m praying for you,
PJ
