Daily Devotional #1,858

I admit it…I like old musicals. There were some great songs that came out of those movies from the 70’s and  before. One of the oldies was a movie called “Show Boat”. The conclusion of the movie finishes with the song  “Old Man River” and it ends like this…
Ah, gits weary an' sick of tryin'
I'm tired of livin' an' scared of dyin'
But ol' man river he just keeps rollin' along
I bet a lot of folks can relate to the words of that song. We see people who are just weary of life. They are just  worn down by cares and troubles and disappointments. And they feel like they have tried to make life worth  living on their own, but like the song, eventually they get sick of trying. And like the words of the song there  are those of us who are just tired of living. The days and the trials they bring have worn them out, spiritually  and physically. But they have no real hope for anything but this life. And even though they are tired of life and  living…they are scared of what comes next in the human experience. They too are scared of dying. That’s  what it ultimately is like in a journey on earth without this Jesus of the Bible. The good news is that God knows  what we feel and what we face each day. And this Jesus invites each earthly traveler to come to him and to  bring our weariness and burdens to him and in return we will find rest for our souls. He tells us that he will  share the burden and will teach us and love us with his humility and gentle heart. Don’t do this life alone.  Don’t give up or give in to despair. But do give this Jesus an opportunity to come and to lift you from the  weariness that life can bring and let him give you new life in him. Each day he offers you love and kindness  and his desire to have you as his child and to share every care and worry and burden that you will ever face  again. And the good news is that you won’t get caught up in being tired of living, and because he has died for  our sins, you don’t have to be scared of dying. And in time you’ll find that he will even put a new song in your  heart…a song of hope for the future and hope for today. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and  I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart,  and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Remember I’m praying for you!
With love, PJ
