On July 21, 1961 astronaut Gus Grissom piloted 15 minutes, 37 seconds on his suborbital flight, two months after fellow NASA astronaut Alan Shepard Jr. was the first American to fly into space. Grissom’s flight went great until he splashed down in the Atlantic and helicopters reached the floating capsule to bring Grissom and the spacecraft home. All of a sudden the hatch blew open and water started pouring into the small Mercury space capsule. Grissom pulled himself out of the capsule and into the ocean waters. They tried to save the spacecraft but it was too full of water and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Even Grissom himself was close to being lost at sea but was brought home safely. Instead of the unreserved acclaim that Shepherd had received, there was talk that Grissom had panicked in the craft and hit the large button to open capsule too soon. There was a sense of doubt as to how he had performed under pressure. Grissom calmly responded to every inquiry that the hatch just blew off. One of the things that most of us didn’t know was that the pressure button to blow the hatch had to be hit so hard that there was no way to not have a significant bruise on the hand. They tested it over and again…and no bruise meant that there had been no way he could have blown the hatch. It apparently did just blow off. Maybe you’ve had something like that happen in your life. You have been accused of something that you know you are innocent of. As a follower of this Jesus of the Bible we can look back to the second book of the Bible and see that it says that God himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. When the pressure comes, when the accusations are launched, God will be there to fight for you. Let him be your strong defender. There will always be those who will think the worst of you…they did for Gus Grissom. But God will honor your innocence and your trust in him. And those who honestly seek the truth will find you true and innocent. Always remember that when you are afraid, in danger, under attack…trust in the Lord. His love for you will honor your innocence and your faith in him. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Exodus 14:14 The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”
Remember I’m praying for you!
