Daily Devotional #1,621

The author G.K. Chesterton once wrote: “If men will not be governed by the Ten Commandments they shall be  governed by the ten thousand commandments.” What would life be like if we lived by the Ten  Commandments? We cannot be saved and go to heaven by obeying them…we are only saved by grace through  faith in this Jesus of the Bible, not by anything we do. But what kind of a world would it be if we obeyed what  God laid down in the Bible for conduct for us with God and with other people? Well, we would worship and  worship only the God of the Bible. We wouldn’t make up any gods or worship material things or concepts or  ourselves! We would give God his due honor. And we would take time to worship with others. We would  honor our mothers and fathers. And we would not murder or break the bond of marriage between a man and a  woman. We wouldn’t steal and lying in any form would be out of bounds. And we wouldn’t lust after our  neighbor’s house, spouse or anything that belongs to someone else. It sure would be a different world wouldn’t  it? You know Jesus was asked what was the most important one of all these commandments. He replied “‘Love  the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and  greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the  Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mat 22:37-40 BSB)
Obey the laws of the land…but make sure you love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. You  do that and you’ll be living large out there! Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they  did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.
(Deuteronomy 5:29 NLT)
Remember I’m praying for you!
