Our Sunday will be extra special because we will be celebrating the wedding anniversary of one of our favorite couples. They have been married for 65 years! The day we are doing the celebration will be the anniversary of the first steps humans made on the moon. When that happened, they had been married almost 10 years! They have been through trials together that we have known about and I can only imagine all that they faced over
these past years. But the thing about my friends is that they are committed followers to this Jesus of the Bible. They look for creative ways to encourage their friends to come to church or to be a part of occasions where they can hear the good news of Jesus Christ together. As I thought about my friends, I remembered a scripture that sums up their life commitment to each other. It comes from the book of Ecclesiastes. It says that two people are better than one because they can help each other succeed. And they have done that. It says that when one falls, the other can reach out and help. And I’ve seen that too. And it says that there is a warmth that they give to each other, and we see that each Sunday as they faithfully come to worship. But how in the world did they make it 65 years together? There is one more verse in that passage. It says that if you are alone…you can be attacked and defeated. But two can stand back-to-back and conquer. But it ends by saying that three are even better…for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. They are a couple who have this Jesus that they serve, wrapped around their marriage, their lives and their hearts. That’s the secret. So, we will celebrate my friends for their love and commitment…but also for their decision to wrap this Jesus around their relationship that has gone on for over six decades. They are living proof that Jesus makes a difference in people and in lives and especially in marriages. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NLT Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. (10) If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. (11) Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? (12) A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
Remember I’m praying for you!
