Daily Devotional #1,667

I have just one regular job as far as yardwork goes at our house. I will pitch in and do other things, but it is my  job to get rid of the weeds in the flower beds in our front yard. Yep, that’s it. So, every few days I go out with  my hula hoe and a rake and cut out those weeds in the beds, so it looks good, but also around all the plants we
have, to keep them from hindering the growth of the stuff we want there. And the thing about it is that I have to  keep doing it on a regular basis. If I’m not out there at least weekly, they will grow like crazy and start to take  over and can even choke out some of the good stuff we have. I was chopping away the other day and as I cut  those weeds, I thought about something that Jesus said. He told a story of a farmer who was planting some  good seed. And the seed he cast out fell on a path, where it disappeared, and on rocky soil where the plants  died from lack of moisture. And some fell into thorns…weeds…that grew up with it and choked out the good  plants. That can happen in our spiritual lives as we follow this Jesus. There are so many things out there that  can take over our passion, our time and our commitment to Christ. They aren’t bad things…but they can take  over our lives, and we find like unattended flower beds, that there is little or no room for our plants. So how is  your gardening going? What do your spiritual flower beds look like? Are they getting crowded with things that  are good, but are choking out your spiritual growth and attention? Do you find yourself missing church more  often, reading your Bible less often and seeing what used to be an ardent commitment of time and service to  this Jesus of the Bible becoming just one more thing that you can drop off your daily or weekly schedule. If so,  it is time to get out and do some serious weeding. Don’t let the “weeds” choke out your spiritual garden which  is the most important thing out there for you, your kids and your loved ones. And like my flower beds in the  front yard, you are going to have to make a continual effort to keep those kinds of weeds under control. But if you will do that, you will have a garden or flower beds that will produce good and healthy vegetation for your  lives and for those you love. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Luke 8:5-8 BSB “A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path,  where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it. (6) Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came  up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture. (7) Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up  with it and choked the seedlings. (8) Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up and produced a  crop—a hundredfold.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Remember, I’m praying for you today….
