Daily Devotional #1,696

We are starting to go through the whole New Testament on Sunday mornings, one chapter at a time. In the  second chapter of Matthew there is the birth of Jesus and the coming of the wise men and then Joseph and Mary  take Jesus into Egypt to escape evil King Herod’s killing of all the young boys in and around Bethlehem. And  then, there is nothing. Luke records one small incident in Jesus’s young life and that’s all. Until Jesus appears  to be baptized by John the Baptist in the wilderness…30 years later. I couldn’t help but wonder what all  happened in those 30 years as Jesus, who is declared God who has come to be with us, just waited. That is  considered an entire generation/s time span. There are a lot of reasons why that might have happened. Thirty  was the typical age for experts in the Jewish faith would consider him a real rabbi or teacher. God could have  sent his son as a full-grown Christ. But he designed us for dynamic existence. We have stages and seasons of  life and we grow and develop in both body and soul and towards others and towards God. He didn’t need to do  all that. But for me it is a reminder that there are times where I just need to wait. And sometimes that means  years. At the right moment Jesus came and at the right moment he began his ministry and at the right moment  he died for our sins and was raised on that Easter Sunday. So maybe there is something that your heart is  waiting for. Something that is a dream, a hope that you carry. Through that little blank spot in the Bible  between Christmas and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, we are reminded that there is a right time for us too.  So, our job is to live well, before and with God and others. And not give up on that dream you have because at  just the right time, God may make it reality for you. But always remember if it is his will to do so…it will come  about only at the right time that he determines. Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Luke 3:23 NLT Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his public ministry. Jesus was known as the son  of Joseph. Joseph was the son of Heli.
