We hung up our outdoor Christmas lights last night. It is always fun to decorate our front yard with lights and then step back and look at the transformation that takes place. We had one small tree that we bypassed so far and when we looked at the yard, there was this pronounced dark spot. When I looked at that I realized that is what our whole yard looks like when the sun goes down. Those lights change everything about our house and
yard. And not only will we get to enjoy those lights, but all our neighbors and passersby will get to have a little boost to their Christmas spirit too. I thought about how appropriate that transformation is this time of the year. As we get ready to celebrate Christmas, it is hard to think about how the world must have been before that first
Christmas. God had made promises of a savior, the Messiah, but the whole world was in a darkness that we, on this side of Christmas can never fully comprehend. The Apostle John wrote in his gospel account in the first verses that he is The Word, which was a name given to Jesus to let us know that he is God expressing himself to humanity…God made flesh. His life brought life to everyone…and it continues to shine in the darkness and no matter how powerful that darkness may seem, it can never extinguish it. So, enjoy the lights of Christmas and if you can hang a few up outdoors or on your tree, remember that they point us back to one whose life brought light to this world. And nothing will ever be able to put it out. And the really awesome promise is that he will return once more, to wrap up this journey of humanity and open the door to another life and place that has never known darkness. Make sure you go out and enjoy all the lights of this season and remember who they point to. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
John 1:4-5 NLT The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. (5) The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
Remember I’m praying for you…
