Daily Devotional #1,736

I was up late last night working, and I took a break and went out into the family room where there is a silhouette  of the manger scene, lighted by some battery powered votive type candles. It was quiet and I just stood there  looking at Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus in the manger highlighted by the flickering lights behind them. I
thought about what it must have been like for them that night. It had been months since they both heard from  angelic beings about this child that lays swaddled before them. And I wondered if they had any idea how big  this whole event was. Even if the shepherds had already come and announced their encounter that night with  the armies of heaven, what was to still take place was beyond any imagination. I thought about the words to the
wonderful song “Mary, Did You Know?”. Did she know that one day her baby boy would walk on water? Or  that he would give sight to the blind man or calm a storm with his hand? Did she know that he is the Lord of all  creation or that one day he would rule the nations? Did she know that her baby boy came to make her new and  that while she delivered him…he would soon deliver her. No…she didn’t. She couldn’t have dreamed the  immensity of what had happened to the world that night and that she and Joseph and shepherds and wisemen  would all play a part in this dramatic change to the world of humans. But Mary when you kissed your little  baby, you kissed the face of God. And when you looked down at your baby boy you were looking at heaven’s  perfect lamb who would bring salvation to a broken world. And that sleeping child she was holding…was the  Great I Am. She didn’t then, but she did later. But for us this Christmas, we can know all these things from  what the Bible teaches and now it is our time to get to know this one who the Bible claims is God who became  flesh and dwelt among us. And this one, born at Christmas is given the name Jesus, because he will save his  people from their sins and give them life now and life beyond the grave. Christmas is almost here, and you  know so much more of what it means than any of those who lived it. Don’t waste what has been given you and  me. Embrace Christmas by embracing this one who is declared Savior and Lord at his birth. Here’s our Bible  verse for today…

Luke 2:11-14 NLT The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of  David! (12) And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth,  lying in a manger.” (13) Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven— praising God and saying, (14) “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is  pleased.”
Remember I’m praying for you…
