Daily Devotional #1,742

People have told me that I have my father’s sense of humor and his eyes. And I have my mother’s shorter  stature and her love of sports. They are gone now and I also inherited some keepsakes that are important to me.
We can inherit ideas, facial features, real estate or any number of things from our parents or other folks in our  lives. But one thing that we can’t directly inherit is faith in the Jesus of the Bible. That is something that each  person has to receive on their own. The Bible says that faith in this Jesus, in his death and resurrection results  in our salvation. But where do you find what you need for that? In the Gospel of John, he writes that what is
written there is given so you can believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him,  you will have life by the power of his name. The Bible lays out what God wants us to believe, but it also shows  us why we believe that. Now the Bible also tells us that we are saved by grace (the giving of a free gift) from  God. So no one can boast about how smart they were or how good they were. We are all broken and guilty of  sin. The Good News is that God has a rescue plan that has nothing to do with rewarding you with heaven for all  the good things you have done. It is a gift received by faith and we each must do that individually. And that’s  the key…faith. Now people who look at the gospel and decide that it cannot possibly be true believe that…by  faith. You see you cannot unequivocally prove the gospel or even the existence of God. But neither can you  disprove it. We choose what we believe, what we will give our lives to. It can’t be handed down to us by  others, and we cannot just parrot what others have told us or even taught us. We need to make that journey on  our own, because this faith is personal and must be and can be discovered and embraced if we have open hearts  for it. So, know what you believe but also know why you believe it. And remember that the Bible is given to  humanity so that we would have all that is needed to receive this Jesus of the Bible as Lord and Savior and to  inherit from him this eternal life. This is your journey and God promises that he will receive any and all who  honestly desire to love him, enjoy him and live with him forever. Here is our Bible verse for today…
John 20:31 NLT But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of  God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
Remember I’m praying for you…
