There is a story of the competition of two aircraft companies when jets were first being used for commercial airlines. As it is told, the Douglas Aircraft company was competing with the Boeing aircraft company to sell Eastern Airlines its first big jets. War hero Eddie Rickenbacker, the head of Eastern Airlines, reportedly told
Donald Douglas that the specifications and claims made by Douglas's company for the DC-8 were close to Boeing's on everything except noise suppression. Rickenbacker then gave Douglas one last chance to out promise Boeing on this feature. After consulting with his engineers, Douglas reported that he didn't feel he could make that promise. Rickenbacker replied, "I know you can't, I just wanted to see if you were still honest." We live in an age where it seems like there are so few people and institutions that we can trust. People lie and sometimes even lie about being lied to! So, what about God? Can he be trusted? Does he tell the truth? Well, the Bible claims that God has given we people of the earth his promises and his oath. And it goes on to remind us that those are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. We can trust that in two different ways. First, the character of God is that he is holy. He is different than we humans. And secondly, we can look at God’s track record in the history of the Bible and in the lives of people right up until this day who tell of how God kept his promises to them. Because of his character, we can have great hope for today and for the future. We can and should shape our lives and goals and dreams in light of him who’s word becomes an “anchor for our souls”. So, trust him and especially when you hit the hard and heartbreaking spots in the road you travel on this earth. And remember that we are to be imitators of God and like a coach of mine used to say to us high school players “You are only as good as your word”. God is going to keep his word so you can trust him…you keep your word so we can trust you. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Hebrews 6:18-19 NLT So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. (19) This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
