A Police officer had pulled over to the curb in a residential neighborhood to check on some paperwork and he happened to notice a little boy riding his tricycle by on the sidewalk. He disappeared around the corner and in a few minutes, he appeared at the other end of the block riding back on the sidewalk towards the officer. He disappeared around the corner again and appeared at the other end, having gone around the block once more. On the third trip around the officer called out to the little guy and he stopped and walked over to the police car. The officer asked, “So what are you doing today?” The little guy said, “I’m running away from home.” The police officer was startled and replied, “You’re running away from home by riding around the block?” The little guy cocked his head and said “Yeah…I’m not allowed to cross the street.” That little story has an important lesson for us. Here was a youngster that was upset about something, but not enough to disobey his parents. And even though he wasn’t happy, his obedience kept him close to the ones who loved him. That works for us “older kids” too. Jesus said that if we obey his commandments, we will stay close to the one who loves us more than anyone ever would or ever could. Our obedience to God’s commandments is evidence of our love for the God of the Bible, even when we are frustrated, angry or even disappointed with our life at the moment. Our willingness to be obedient is a demonstration of our love in space and time. God knows that you won’t be happy with life all the time and may not even be happy with him all the time. But if you love him, you’ll obey him. And if you obey him, you’ll never “cross that street” that will divide your heart from his. So, pedal around your “block” when you get frustrated…just don’t cross that street that will separate you from his lavish love for you. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
John 14:21 NLT Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
