My mom spent years teaching typing in a high school. She taught me too and for that I am so grateful! In the typing classes kids would have an assignment to type, on a typewriter, and then they would turn the papers in and mom would have to correct the mistakes made for each student in all of her classes. She once told me that in time, she could look at a paper and the mistakes, misspellings or any other errors would just jump off the page to her. The kids would check for mistakes, but they rarely ever saw them. But Mom had trained herself to look for something and she found it. She would read things that I sent out for the church and she’d gently say, “Did you know that you misspelled a certain word?” She just looked and could see what others could not. Whatever you are trained to look for, you are pretty sure to find. The Apostle Paul wrote that we can sure see all the troubles around us now. We see them in the world, in others and certainly in our own lives. But he reminds us to not look at the troubles, everyone can see them. Instead, he tells us that we need to focus on things that cannot be seen…at least by others. You are going to have to endure stuff, but as you walk closer with this God of the Bible and read that Bible and become talking partners with God himself, you will be able to see things through the eyes of faith. No, you’re not making stuff up. We look at troubles and difficulties, but what we see is hope…and it is not in this world. Hope is in Christ. No, you cannot see him with those physical eyes. But we are called to not live by what everyone else can see, but to let God lead us into a life of faith based on his promises to us. And then, when those around you see only things that bring anger and sorrow and disappointment, you will have the ability to speak of hope, for today and for a future that never ends. Mom trained her eyes to pick out every mistake on those typewritten pages. You spend time with God and you’ll begin to see, even in the hardest times, the one who possesses all power and love and forgiveness who brings you joy now and joys to come that will last forever. Let God train your eyes of faith to see what he sees. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
