There is an unsolved mystery from nearly 100 years ago that took place in New York. A forty-five year old New York judge spent the evening at dinner with friends and then left in a cab and was never seen or heard from again. Because he was a judge, the FBI suspected kidnapping or some kind of retribution from the Mafia. Neither investigation led anywhere. The only clue that they had came from his wife who came back to their apartment that night he disappeared and on the kitchen table there was a check made out to her for a large amount of money. And attached to it was a note in her husband's handwriting and it said, “I am very, very tired. Love, Jim". And they asked if this was a comment made at the end of a really hard day or was he saying that he was tired and he just gave up? The case hit a dead end and the thought was that he had taken the taxi to some destination and took his own life. That the weariness in his life was
more than his soul could take. I bet all of us hit the wall at one time or another and are just feeling overcome by the weariness that life can bring. Our God knows that in a world broken by sin it can easily happen. The good news is that God has already given you and me an invitation to come and find rest in him. Jesus said "Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. And his promise is that in him, you and I can find rest for our souls. Life can be hard and confusing...but this Jesus of the Bible knows the burdens that you carry this day. He knows when you are beat and discouraged and feel like you carry the weight of the world. And his invitation is to come to him...had he will give you rest. And it will include rest for the deepest part of your being...rest for your soul. So when the weariness comes, and it will, stop and let this Jesus know you are tired and let him bring you the rest you need to continue your journey with him through your time on this earth. And the good news is that same comfort and companionship will continue on into heaven itself. So go get some rest...in the hands of the only one who can truly give it to you. Matthew 11:28-29 Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
