Have you ever just looked at how other people drive? There are a lot of things we do wrong as California drivers…we speed, cut people off in traffic, go slow in the fast lane of a highway or freeway, but there is one dangerous thing that we don’t do that is so simple. For some reason so many of us struggle to use the turn signals on our cars. Yeah, the blinkers. It doesn’t require any extra fuel, and it requires a tiny amount of effort, and the law requires us to signal when we turn or make a lane change. It seems like a silly thing to get upset about, but I don’t know how many times I’ve had to sit and wait for a car that has paused and at a corner or in a street and I have no idea what they are planning to do. And I can drive down the freeway and people are all over the place and half the people never use the blinker. Except…when there is a law enforcement officer. And then it looks like a celebration of lights out there. I’ve never seen anyone not use a blinker when a police officer is watching. But we have that kind of attitude so often. I remember one time I asked folks to all put on name tags at an event and one guy said, “I don’t need a name tag…I know my name”. I didn’t even respond. That’s what we people on earth are naturally like. But the Bible reminds us that when we come to this Jesus of the Bible and are transformed in heart and mind by him…we begin a journey of being conformed to being more like him. The Apostle Paul wrote that we should not only look out for our own interests, but we should take an interest in others. It is what Jesus taught…love God and love the people around us. It doesn’t have to be great and grandiose things. Simple kindness each day, as often as we have the opportunity. Do that and you will be different…and you will make God look
good. And have mercy on the rest of us and use that turn signal in your car! Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Philippians 2:4-5 NLT Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (5) You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
