Daily Devotional #1,470

I was driving home after dark the other night and I came to the last stop sign in our neighborhood before turning on to my street. I cruised up to the four-way stop and a car was coming at me from the other direction. They were going about the speed limit, which is 30 miles an hour there. I stopped and there was just something about that car that made me just wait and watch. And sure enough, the car slowed down to maybe 25 miles an hour and just sailed right through that stop sign! There was no traffic, but there was just that hint of slowing down and then right through the intersection. By the way, the stop signs are outlined in flashing red lights, so it is impossible to miss them. It was a choice that driver made. He or she knew what the right thing was to do…and made the choice to not do it. It was a simple act…that would have cost maybe 30 seconds…but they just didn’t want to do what they were supposed to do. In the book of James, we are told that there are a lot of things that we know we ought to do. Things that are boiled down to acts of loving God and acts of loving others. We know that we ought to do things in this life that God has commanded us to do…and we don’t do them. They are not hard or life changing…at least for the most part. But obedience to the goodness of God goes against our grain sometimes even as followers of this Jesus of the Bible. We are told in James that it is a sin to know what you ought to do and then…not do it. So today, how about you and I make an effort to do the things that make God happy and make him look good. We know what we ought to do…so choose to do the right and good and loving thing this day.

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

James 4:17 NLT Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

Remember I’m praying for you…
