I got hooked on videos of a prank that three guys were playing on people at different locations outdoors. They set up an electric keyboard and had a sign that invited people to sit and take their hand at playing a song. There were three guys milling about, one dressed as a highway worker, another a security guard and the last a custodian. They would wait for a person to sit down at the keyboard and mess with the keys a bit and then one of them would find some reason for asking the person to get up from the keyboard for just a minute and they would tell them that they were learning a song from a relative and would begin pecking away with one or two fingers. But what the person being filmed didn’t know was these workmen were concert level professional pianists. When they would ask to sit at the keyboard, folks would be gracious and give them a chance to play and then kind of fold their arms and roll their eyes as they pounded out the first notes. But their impatient expressions turned to delight when they heard everything from classical music to “Eye of the Tiger” and the theme from “Pirates of the Caribbean” suddenly spring off that keyboard as the fingers danced across the keys. The folks were planning on being patient until that custodian finished plunking out the first notes and suddenly, they were treated to music that they never imagined would be played outside there at the mall or ocean front. They would listen and laugh and sometimes even dance to the incredible music that these wonderful professional musicians produced. I loved the joy they had in good humoredly pranking the folks and then filling the surroundings with these incredible tunes. I thought about how fun it must be to have the talent and discipline to produce that kind of music, knowing the joy that it brings to people. And then I remembered a Psalm that reminded me that for the followers of this Jesus of the Bible, God has put a song in our mouths…a new song. It is the song of life and sound of praise to the God who loves us so very much. But as our lives sing forth to the world around us, people will see what God has done, and they too just might worship him. And it tells us that they also will put their trust in him for all eternity. And then they will have the song in their hearts and mouths. So, surprise the people around you today…let your life and words and attitude be a song that will cause people to turn from frustration or anger or hurt or fear. And let them begin to sing with you this new song, the music of heaven’s goodness and hope and love and kindness. They just might be as surprised to hear this song come from you like those folks in the videos were to hear the songs come from people they never
suspected could bring that to their ears and hearts. Sing that song with your life and words today…and give them the chance to join in singing this song that will bring them joy and happiness for now and forever. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Psalm 40:3 ERV He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see what he did and worship him. They will put their trust in the LORD.
Remember I’m praying for you…
